LOCK

Etienne was only half awake when Carter turned off the shower. Carter had washed them both clean with the sweet smelling soap. Carter then tenderly toweled him dry before carrying him into his bedroom. Etienne’s sleepy mind wondered how Carter knew which one was his bedroom, but he was too tired to ask. Carter then slipped Etienne between cool cotton sheets in the bed. Etienne groaned when Carter’s arms left him for a moment.

Carter kissed his forehead and whispered, “I’ll be right back. Just going to get our clothes.”

That was a really good idea. To find his and Carter’s clothes scattered throughout the bathroom would have alerted Ethel – or, worse, his father – that something was going on between him and the other young man. After all, friends would not bathe together. At least not in the old-fashioned town of Emmott’s Mill.

It wasn’t long though before he heard the snick of his bedroom door closing and the soft click of the lock being put in place. There had been a time when his father had not wanted him to have a lock on his room. His mother though had been insistent that young people needed privacy. She had a lock on her office door, which was the only room on the third floor, and Armand had a lock on his study. For these reasons, it would be hypocritical of them not to allow their son a lock on his bedroom, the only room in the house that was truly his. His father had finally relented. The ironic part was that Etienne had rarely used the lock and hadn’t really ever needed it.

Until today.

He smiled. Now he had something truly private to protect.

He soon felt the mattress dip with Carter’s weight as his lover slipped into bed beside him. Carter’s body felt cool against his own as both were still slightly damp with shower water. He naturally found himself winding his arms around the bigger body and resting his cheek against Carter’s chest. It felt right to fall asleep with the sound of Carter’s heartbeat in his ears as if he’d been waiting for this all his life.

Just on the cusp of sleep though he realized how selfish he was being. He had gotten his own release, but he had done nothing for Carter. Especially, after Carter had used his mouth like he had, Etienne needed to give something as intimate and loving in response. He tried to crack open his eyelids.

“Carter, sorry. Need to please you.” He reached weakly for Carter’s sex.

But his lover gently caught his wrist and brought that hand up to his mouth. Carter kissed the back of Etienne’s fingers.

“Shhh, pet, I’m fine. I got my release when you did. Don’t worry about me,” Carter assured him. There were more kisses, this time all across his brow. “Sleep now.”

Etienne wanted to object. He wanted to be awake for every minute that their limbs entwined together. But sleep pulled him under like the undertow of the sea. He had never fallen so very fast into the darkness of unconsciousness.
